The Straight Razor Shave Ritual
If you've never had a proper barbershop shave, here's what to expect at Brute:
Hot Towel — skin preparation
A hot wet towel is applied for 2–3 minutes. The heat opens pores, softens beard hair, and primes skin so the razor can glide without resistance.
Shaving Cream by Brush
Premium shaving cream is worked into the skin with a badger or synthetic brush. The mechanical action lifts beard hairs and adds additional warmth — the result is a far better lather than canned foam.
Straight Razor Pass
The barber shaves with the grain first, then — where skin allows — against the grain for maximum closeness. The razor moves at a precise angle with zero pressure. The blade does the work.
Cold Towel Close
A cold wet towel closes pores, reduces any post-shave sensitivity, and immediately calms the skin. This step is what separates a proper shave from a cheap one.
Aftershave Balm
A finishing balm matched to your skin type — no harsh alcohol, which would dry and irritate freshly shaved skin. You leave feeling smooth, not raw.
First time? Arrive with your normal stubble — no need to pre-shave. Ideally 1–4 mm of growth. If you have a full beard and want it removed, just let us know when booking — we'll account for the additional prep time.

Who should get a straight razor shave
A straight razor shave is ideal if you have sensitive skin that reacts badly to cartridge razors — razor burn, ingrown hairs, red bumps after shaving. The straight razor glides cleanly without the tearing pressure that multi-blade cartridges create.
It's also the right choice before an important event — a presentation, a wedding, a reunion. The result lasts 2–4 days instead of the 1–2 days you'd get from even the best home razor.
Or come simply for the experience. A 40-minute straight razor shave is one of the better ways to spend time on yourself — unhurried, deliberate, and with a result you'll notice for days.

Is a straight razor shave safe?
Yes, when performed by an experienced barber. A straight razor is sharp but applies zero downward pressure — unlike a cartridge razor that you push into your skin. Our barbers are trained in blade angle, skin tension technique, and reading each client's skin and grain direction. The risk of cuts is lower than with DIY shaving.
What's the difference between a beard trim and a straight razor shave?
Beard trim: we shape, edge, and maintain your existing facial hair — adjusting length, cleaning up the neckline and cheek lines, and refining the overall silhouette. Straight razor shave: we remove facial hair from designated areas (full face, or just neck and cheek areas) using a classic straight razor with hot towel protocol.
How long does it take?
Beard trim: 20–30 minutes. Straight razor shave: 35–50 minutes depending on beard density and skin type. Combo haircut + beard: 60–75 minutes. We don't rush any of these — the timing reflects the actual work, not a schedule.
Do you do beard toning or coloring?
We offer beard toning — a temporary color treatment that evens out uneven beard color or covers early grey. It's a 20-minute add-on to any beard service. Ask about it when booking or when you arrive.
Where exactly are you located?
We're at Na Slupi 140/9, Praha 2 – Vyšehrad. Closest metro: Vyšehrad (line C), about a 6-minute walk. Tram stop Albertov is 2 minutes. There's paid street parking available on nearby streets. We're not in the tourist center — which is part of the appeal.
